ウィル・コットンは、1965年、マサチューセッツ州生まれのアーティストです。

2010年に歌手ケイティ・ペリーのミュージックビデオの芸術監督を務め、ケイティのポートレートもいくつか描いていますので、ご存知の方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんね。

ケイティがコットンの作品に興味を持ってアプローチしたことにより、コットンは本物の焼き菓子やお菓子を使った立体的なキャンディランドゲームボードなど、セット用のオリジナル小道具を制作しました。

コットンの作品である「コットン・キャンディ・ケイティ」は、綿菓子の雲の中に横たわるケイティの絵で、彼女のアルバムのカバーアートとしても使用されています。

このように甘い砂糖菓子の風景の中にいる女性を、フォトリアリズムで官能的に描く作品が特に人気です。

フォトリアリズムは、1970年代前後にポップアートの影響を受けつつ抽象表現主義の対照的な動きとして、ニューヨークで起こった芸術運動です。スーパーリアリズム、ハイパーリアリズムと呼ばれることもあります。

フォトリアリズムは、主に写真を克明に描写していく画法のことで、徹底して写実的に描きとりますが、非情や虚構を表現する点が特徴です。

毎日、世界中の様々な場所で、企業が必要のないものを消費者に買わせることで利益を上げています。

コットンの作品は、情熱と欲望を喚起する広告の具現化であるスイーツやキャンディと何らかの形で結びついており、私たちが単純なマーケティングに簡単に取り込まれてしまうことをテーマにしています。

このような人間に共通する厄介な欠点に気づいたコットンは、消費文化という世界共通の言語に基づいたアートを制作しています。

彼の作品には、このような深いメッセージがありますが、基本的には視覚で楽しんでもらうことを目的としています。

コットンの作品は、子供向けのボードゲームや、ジョージ・ペティのピンナップポスター、フレデリック・エドウィン・チャーチの風景画、ウィリアム・アドルフ・ブグローのアカデミックなヌード画など様々な題材からインスピレーションを受けています。

また、ロココを代表するフランスの画家・フランソワ・ブーシェ（1703-1770）やジャン・オノレ・フラゴナール（1732-1806）なども敬愛しています。フラゴナールはブーシェに師事しており、甘美で官能的な世界を描きました。

現在コットンはニューヨークを拠点に、現地のギャラリーなどで多数の個展を開催しており、作品はシアトル美術館やコロンバス美術館にも収蔵されています。

We have acquired a work by Will Cotton. Created in 1993, the piece is painted with acrylic and spray paint on canvas. It charmingly depicts Mickey and his friends enjoying themselves.

This artwork was part of a collection entrusted to us by a valued collector. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the opportunity.

Will Cotton is an artist born in 1965 in Massachusetts, USA.

Some may know him as the art director for singer Katy Perry’s 2010 music video. He also painted several portraits of her.

Katy Perry, intrigued by Cotton’s work, approached him, leading him to design original props for the set, including a three-dimensional Candy Land-style game board made with real baked goods and sweets.

One of his signature works, Cotton Candy Katy, portrays Katy lying amidst clouds of cotton candy and was used as the cover art for her album.

Cotton is especially renowned for his photorealistic paintings of sensual women in dreamlike, sugar-laden landscapes.

Photorealism is an art movement that emerged in New York around the 1970s as a response to abstract expressionism, influenced in part by pop art. It is also known as Superrealism or Hyperrealism.

This technique involves painstakingly detailed depictions based on photographs, aiming for extreme realism. However, it often expresses themes of emotional detachment or artificiality.

In today’s world, businesses generate profits daily by persuading consumers to purchase things they don’t necessarily need.

Cotton’s works often incorporate sweets and candies—the very symbols of desire and indulgence used in advertising—exploring how easily we fall prey to simple marketing strategies.

Recognizing this universal human vulnerability, Cotton creates art rooted in the shared language of consumer culture.

Though his work conveys such profound messages, it is ultimately meant to delight and captivate through visual experience.

His inspirations span a wide range—from children’s board games and George Petty’s pin-up posters to the landscapes of Frederic Edwin Church and the academic nudes of William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

He also greatly admires Rococo painters such as François Boucher (1703–1770) and Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806). Fragonard, a pupil of Boucher, was known for his sweetly sensual depictions of idyllic worlds.

Currently based in New York, Cotton has held numerous solo exhibitions at local galleries, and his works are part of the collections of the Seattle Art Museum and the Columbus Museum of Art.
